Chanca piedra is a South American herb that has been used traditionally to help pass kidney stones. In fact, the English translation for chanca piedra is ‘stone crusher.’ Peer reviewed clinical evidence validates its historical use to help with calcium-oxalate stones, which represents 80% of kidney stones.
The traditional healers of Peru were not far off when they coined the name “stone crusher.” Studies have shown that Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus Niruri) interferes with many stages of stone formation and has the ability to promote relaxation of the muscle specific to the urinary tract.
Chanca Piedra herb has diuretic properties. Several human studies have reported that Chanca Piedra may increase urinary output.
Protect against infection
Chanca Piedra has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 2000 years as an antiviral and antimicrobial agent. Studies have shown that Chanca Piedra is effective against bacterial strains, such as E. coli, that are frequently associated with urinary tract infections.
Cleanse and detoxify the kidney
In Traditional Chinese Medicine the kidney is considered the mother organ. Blockages of energy or Qi may result in harmful toxins accumulating in the body. Headaches, back pain, low energy, and puffiness in the face or legs may be triggered by kidney congestion. Chanca Piedra can be used to gently cleanse and detoxify the kidney, helping the body rejuvenate.
Phyllanthus niruri (gale of the wind)
Some six years ago I had been suffering fairly strong lower back pain. The urologist finally informed me that my left kidney had a very large stone. The size of a large marble was the metaphor he used. Recommended treatment was lithotripsy. The second time the ultrasound managed to crack the kidney stone into two pieces but it was still too large to pass. The urologist then recommended a more complex procedure. The senior doctor used a laser first to break the stone up and then a little scoop affair to capture the small bits and extract them. This was mostly successful except for six small bits that were missed. The urologist hoped that these bits would pass out on their own. Every three months for three years I would go and get a scan then visit the urologist who would inform me that yes those bits were still there and that for the pain they were causing I could eat an over the counter pain killer.
I repeatedly asked the urologist if there was anything else to take that would dissolve the small bits of kidney stone but always he would say “No, that’s a fairy tale wish.” Followed by,”One of these days we need to get you back in the hospital and see if we can get those other bits out.” When he informed me that the bits were getting bigger he pushed hard for me to make an appointment for the hospital procedure. I resisted and instead spoke with the owner of Eating Well Organically, a health food store in Uptown Waterloo. She recommended a product that she had just started carrying called Chanca Piedra.
As soon as I started taking this supplement I noticed a difference. I was in less pain and had longer periods of no pain. I live an active life and apparently this would cause the bits to move around inside my kidney and this was the source of the pain. I could get rid of this pain in less than thirty minutes by taking an additional two capsules. By taking Chanca Piedra I feel so much better, and I now have a remedy if I feel any pain in my kidney area. I believe continued use will help prevent new stones from forming.
In the past I have heard horror stories of the pain people have endured while waiting for regular medical treatment for their kidney stones. I only wish I had known about this supplement then because not only would I have recommended it but I would have immediately gone out and purchased a bottle to give the person suffering. I have done some internet research on Chanca Piedra and I can’t understand why doctors have no knowledge of this herb and its beneficial effects. I continue to tell anyone who will listen about it. I give this product my highest recommendation to anyone, especially someone suffering from kidney stones who wants a natural herbal solution.
