Letting Go of Low Self-Esteem

If you have low self-esteem, you're part of the largest club in the country! Many, many people suffer from low self-esteem. However, you can change how you feel about yourself by doing a few simple things. Here are some strategies that I've discovered for boosting self-satisfaction

Start With The Basics

By taking care of the basics, you can actually improve your self-esteem. These basics include a healthy diet (nutritious food and plenty of water), exercise and a great night's sleep. Sounds simple, right? It's actually harder than you might think. Many of us are dehydrated; we don't get enough rest due to a busy schedule or stress. How many times have you skipped breakfast or lunch due to a demanding workload? Had no time for exercise on top of that and you've got an unhealthy lifestyle that's compounding any self-esteem issues that you might have. By not eating properly, resting or exercising, you are basically saying, "I don't have time to take care of myself" or "my needs aren't as important as the other demands in my life". Believe it or not, we sometimes take better care of our cars than our bodies. You would never drive a car without gas or oil in it, but how often do you rush out in the mornings and don't bother to eat because you're in a hurry? We get one body during our lifetime, but we go through a few cars. Humans can't afford to "run on an empty tank". When you do, you aren't valuing your health or supporting your overall wellbeing.

Make Yourself a Priority

Women have an especially hard time with this, because we often take care of other people before we take care of ourselves. Learn to say NO to things that aren’t necessary and remove things from your schedule that aren’t as important as taking care of yourself first. Set aside some time to explore your own interests. Make room for your hobbies or passions—even if you can only squeeze in one afternoon every week. Nurture yourself and foster your creative growth. By making yourself a priority, you are also bolstering your self-esteem.

Become An Example For Others To Follow

Low self-esteem is the gift that keeps on giving, trust me. I learned low-esteem from my parents. However, I don't want my children to follow by example. Our children watch the decisions that we make. When we don't take care of ourselves our children tend to copy this behaviour. Get your basics in and take care of yourself first and you'll become a healthy example for the other people in your life to follow. You'll not only be stronger and have more to give, but your children will adapt your self-respecting habits.
